70Fantastic Frisians
Northern Holland's Black Beauty
Many people immediately think of the familiar black and white cow if the name Friesian is mentioned. The same region in the North of Holland is also home to a wonderful and versatile Black Horse. The Frisian or Friesian or even Fresian horse is a stocky mid sized horse with showy paces, well set off by abundant feathers or long hair around its heels. The paces of this well rounded mount are suited to high level dressage yet it is just as at home pulling a carriage, jumping cross country or decked out in full medieval costume for jousting reenactments.
Originally the Frisian was bred as a war horse capable of carrying a knight into battle with the agility needed to keep him out of trouble. As armor became heavier the Frisian fell out of favor to the larger shire type of horse. Recently, the Frisian has risen from obscurity and has become much sort after and currently is very expensive. It is seen in the dressage arena where its forward going and flashy paces make it very popular Frisians in harness as carriage horses make an impressive sight. They are also natural jumpers.
Invariably solid black with maybe a white star, they vary from 14.2 to 17 hands. An occasional chestnut may be foaled but not registered in the stud book. From being an almost forgotten breed, the Frisian has surged in popularity to become one of the most desirable breeds for its docility and versatility. I wish I could afford one!

I didn't know how graceful they were. Reminds me of the Arabian, but they have a more wild grace while the Frisian is fluid. You can tell from the video that it is an animal in harmony with its rider. I had to think of the Clydesdale to since it was a Dutch origin horse - is there a relation? (Clydesdale is Belgian right?).
Gypsy Willow, you've hit the target this time. Thanks for reminding me why I've wanted a Friesian for the past 15 years!
Absolutely they are. I might have to look up that calendar...or start making more money! I guess I should have snagged one of these horses back before they rose so much in popularity. It's true, now you see them all over the horse world.
Not a bad idea, at that. :-)
Stunning. When I was little my fantasy horse was black with a white star. I intended to call it Black Magic. Well, I had a plastic Breyer horse of this ilk and its name was Black Magic. Sigh. It will never happen now, but I do admire them from afar. Thanks for the lovely photos and the YouTube fantasy. I certainly can imagine an heroic knight riding in on the back of a Friesian.
These horses are beauties. I love the long hair around their feet. It would be wonderful to own one, as black horses tend to look so elegant and showy anyway. Great hub! Thanks for introducing this breed of horse to the rest of us who never knew such beauties existed. At least not their breed.
was black beauty a Friesian?
Gyps: This horse is absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for such an educational hub. I appreciate learning new things all the time. I should let you know that I am unfortunately afraid of horses... Stop laughing!

I have to agree --- They are magnificent! They remind me a bit of the Clydesdale.
